A patio is only as good as its base. A compacted sub-base, a level bed and a slight fall to shed rainwater away from the house prevent sinking and standing water.
Paving over a large part of a front garden generally needs permeable materials or proper drainage, so rainwater does not run into the road or drains. Check the current rules before you start.
Porcelain, sandstone, concrete and block paving look and wear differently. Ask to see samples outdoors and ask how each one deals with moss and staining.
Keep paving below the damp-proof course of the house, and plan steps and slopes for safe, comfortable access.
